Inflammation of the glans and foreskin.
Balanoposthitis occurs over a wide age range and may have any of multiple bacterial or fungal origins or be caused by contact dermatitides. These complex infections are often caused by the inability to retract the foreskin and poor hygiene. These conditions lead to colonization and overgrowth on the invading organism. Treatment focuses on clearing the infection and improved hygiene. Circumcision is often suggested as a form of treatment, but it seldom necessary. Balanoposthitis should not be confused with balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans penis or the clitoris.
